My iOS 13 Wishlist

Around this time last year I wrote the iOS 12 wish list, And to my surprise most of my prayers were answered, and iOS 12 has been wonderful for the last 5 months or so. But now we're coming up on another WWDC, Yes its still 5 months away but that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from speculating what the next version of iOS will be.Here are a few features that I'd like to see on the next version of iOS.

A New Look For iOS 13

Ever since iOS 7 iOS has looked the same more or less, With its flat icons and punchy colours. I feel that the time for a refresh is long overdue. Don't get me wrong it looks great but, Its stale and I fresh new coat of paint can go wonders in making iOS 13 feel radically different. Apple has their work cut out for them if they do decide to go down this route. Finding a new design aesthetic isn't the most easiest thing in the world. When you consider that the new design refresh will have be loved and should be simple to use for millions world over.  Rumours have it that Apple is working on a redesigned home screen. Well have to wait and see how this turns out as the home screen hasn't changed at all in the previous 12 years of iOS' existence. In my personal opinion Apple could add Apple Watch like complications to the iPhone home-screen giving you a lot more information at a glance. If those complications work on the Apple Watch and if people do love them, An iOS version of them wouldn't be such a bad idea.

Better Siri Shortcuts

I love Siri Shortcuts as I've made abundantly clear in the past. But Siri Shortcuts could improve a lot in my opinion. Firstly this isn't iOS 13 related but a web client for iOS 13 would be a godsend. This would allow you to make Siri Shortcuts where ever you are as long as you have a browser, Be it Mac, Windows or anything in between. I would love it if Apple could get rid of Siri saying "Shortcut says" every time you trigger a shortcut. That would give shortcuts a more native and dare I say professional feel?
More over I'd love the ability to pass data variables into the shortcut via the trigger phrase. For example if I were to say " I'm having pasta for dinner", Shortcuts should be able to extract pasta from the trigger sentence and then add it to my health app or something. I know the last one is a bit far fetched but I'd love to see it none the less.

A Redesigned Siri

Okay I find Siri to be quite useful especially after Siri Shortcuts. But I'm not okay with Siri hijacking my screen every time she's triggered. Id love it Siri had a more non intrusive, minimalistic design, Kind of like what bixby has. Just a little sliver at the top and if you need to see more information, something like pictures. You can drag or tap on it to show you the entire thing.

Better Maps

I'll admit I haven't been an avid user of Apple maps in the past, Only because Apple maps didn't offer turn by turn navigation where I live.Which kind of defeats the purpose of a mapping service. But recently they've enabled that and I've started to use Apple Maps more and more. In my experience its user friendly, its fast, The traffic routing is accurate enough its all good. BUT and theres a but Apple really needs to step up its catalog of places that it shows on it's map, When compared to Google Maps Apple's offering pales in comparison. I want Apple to really start adding businesses and places of interest to Apple Maps. Apple Maps is really great but it's lack of places just holds it back in most regions.

The Files App

I know I know I've gushed over the files app before, But that doesn't mean that it can't be improved. In my experience at least on my iPad after using the files app for a while, the space that the files app occupies goes up drastically. I mean to epic proportions, A quick reinstall fixes this issue for me and none of my files are lost in the process. It would be great if you could just save files directly in the files app and you didn't need a folder to save stuff in. Drag and Drop is amazing and it would be great if you'd be able to drag and drop to more places in the OS.

Obligatory Dark Mode Request

I feel like we've been asking for a dark mode in iOS for the longest time and with each new iteration of iOS we hold our breath thinking that maybe this will be the year we finally get dark mode. But alas up until now we haven't gotten it and no iOS 13 Wishlist would be complete without a dark mode request so here you go!

So those are my top 5 features that I want to see in iOS 13! What about you

What Is KaiOS? The Android Competitor You've Never Heard Of

When you think of the smartphone OS wars, we have two warring factions, Android and iOS. For about 5 years this was the way it's been. But in the distant past there were three smartphone Operating Systems. Android, iOS and Windows. The three way battle for OS supremacy raged on and before long the triopoly became a duopoly. With Windows phone being more or less dead the two major Operating systems only had each other to worry about for the longest time. Now the incumbents have a new kid on the block to worry about , KaiOS. But wait if KaiOS is so great how come no ones ever heard of it before? But First Some Background KaiOS is built on the ashes of the Firefox OS , For phones that aren't necessarily smart. You remember those old phones that you used to rock back in 2009? Yeah phones like those. The aim of KaiOS is to bring down the features of a smartphone down to a feature phone. So for that very same reason Kai...

iPhone XR: The Display Is Fine!

Its September and like every year like clockwork Apple has come out with new iPhones and would it be an iPhone launch without some controversy. The iPhone X had the notch and the iPhone 7 didn't have a headphone jack . In true Apple fashion this year's iPhones have stirred up controversy, Well one of them. Apple released the iPhone XS , the XS Max and the iPhone XR. With the two S models being the premium pricey phones that we've come to expect. The real wild card was the iPhone XR but in my personal opinion it is the best possible phone that we could have expected. Why I'm Okay With The Display Most in the tech industry upon knowing about the pixel density of the iPhone XR instantly compared it to the iPhone 4 from 2010. Yes on paper they both have the exact same specs. But paper rarely tells the whole story. While the pixels per inch have stayed the same the underlying ...

When Will Apple Remove The Charging Port?

Apple's all about that wireless technology and its no secret that Apple eventually wants a port-less iPhone. With the death of the headphone jack , Apple has obviously trained its guns on the lightning port. Surely even Apple isn't courageous enough to remove something as basic as the charging port. Right? If this is the first time you've heard about this you might be feeling a sense of dread. Don't worry thats normal. Yes all those memes that said that the next iPhone might not have a charging port were true. The lightning port's days are numbered. Why This Obsession With Wireless? Apple believes that wireless is the future ( And it is ) and all their design choices and decisions as a company over the past few years have been to wean us off cables and physical media. Starting with the removal of the CD drive, then with the headphone jack, then with very few ports on the MacBook. Yeah Apple has been hinting at us to switch ...
